Michelle Canny

Key Associate

Michelle Canny’s expertise in program evaluation, policy review and development, and analysis helps our clients to plan future directions. Michelle is adept at working with government departments, TAFE institutes, universities and schools. Comfortable working with the most senior levels of these organisations, Michelle is able to provide simple, elegant advice built from a rigorous analytical framework combining qualitative and quantitative assessment. Michelle is passionate about educational opportunities, retention, pathways and transitions for young adults and uses her background in policy, economics and finance to provide innovative and robust insights.

Prior to joining PhillipsKPA Michelle held positions in NSW Treasury and the now Victorian Department of Education and Training.  Her roles included Manager, TAFE Transitions Taskforce, Manager VET Policy and a range of senior policy advice, development and management, including executive, roles.   She was also Acting Director of the Skills Policy Branch, covering VET, Higher Education and Commonwealth-State policy, during the critical period of vocational education and training skills reform in Victoria in 2008, formally known as Securing Jobs for Your Future.

In her work for the Department Michelle managed major policy projects / statements focussing on transitions, economic and demographic factors, and demand projections for higher education and vocational education and training (VET).  These included The Tertiary Education Access Plan and working with Professor Kwong Lee Dow on detailed regional studies into the Outer South East of Melbourne and Gippsland.

During her time in NSW Michelle led the Post-Implementation Review of the New Schools Privately Financed Project and provided financial policy advice on the education portfolio in the areas of industrial relations, capital program, asset management and budget management.
