Tony Shannon

Associate

Emeritus Professor Tony Shannon AM has been involved in policy analysis and development as a consultant in recent years with Higher Education Providers and peak bodies (ACPET, ATEM and COPHE). He retired from UTS where he had been Foundation Dean of the Graduate Research School and Professor of Applied Mathematics, although he has continued to carry out research in mathematics and higher education. He had been invested as a Member of the Order of Australia in June 1987 for contributions to education, in the field of applied mathematics. He was also a foundation convener of what is now the Australian Council of Graduate Research. He is on the Panel of Experts for TEQSA, and he has been invited to chair audit panels for AUQA, the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, and the Papua New Guinea Register of Experts for Quality Assessment of Universities.
 

Tony’s recent consulting projects include:

  • ‘Research coach’ at a university in Queensland
  • Advising HEPs on governance separation of powers and delegation of authority
  • Guiding HEPs through TEQSA registration and accreditation
  • Member of a panel of three with Peter Shergold and Anthony McClaren sponsored by ATEM at Western Sydney University on a private provider perspective on higher education standards
  • Providing mechanisms to assist HEPs engage with research, scholarly and creative activities
  • Conducting curriculum reviews and guiding benchmarking and moderation for HEPs
  • Chairing HEP Academic Boards and RTO Course Advisory Committees
 
Tony holds the higher doctorate, Doctor of Science, from UTS, awarded for research on “Interdisciplinary Contributions to the Diagnosis and Management of Diabetes Mellitus”. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Notre Dame Australia in 2019.
