COVID-19 impacts on universities “the biggest shock ever”

The measures to control the coronavirus pandemic will produce “the biggest shock ever” experienced by the higher education sector, says PhillipsKPA Director, David Phillips.

Speaking on ABC Radio National with interviewer Geraldine Doogue and Monash University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner, David said that the sector was facing enormous revenue reductions from international student fees. While universities will survive the shock, the impacts will be wide-ranging and differential across the sector and there will be major implications for research and infrastructure.

The interview discussed the lack of Federal Government support for universities and for international students stranded in Australia, despite the fact that international education (across all sectors) is – or at least was -  Australia’s third largest export industry, generating around $40billion and supporting about 250,000 jobs.
